Postmortem Report

  • Reporting Archivist: #1105
  • Universe Thread: Inga-603
  • Investigation: The Midnight Order
  • File#: HVM-001
  • Contractor: Detective Hubert “Vagath” Miller a.k.a. “The Obsidian Eye”
  • Subject Matter: His unique hat

Detective Hubert Miller appeared to be a tall middle-aged dark skinned man, with a passion for discovering truths. Millers reputation was well known among powerful beings and the secret societies of Earth. His targets were typically impossible to find through most traditional means of investigation, and in almost all instances… a potentially lethal threat.

Detective Miller was hired by KULT to investigate the Midnight Order. Despite the KULTs connections in this thread and neighboring threads, little to nothing is known about The Midnight Order. They may be a cabal of fanatic extremists, or a faction that KULT might align with to further the goals of glorious KULT. Our methods of investigation of this particular target were not as fruitful as we had hoped them to be; and thus he was employed as “local help”.

To those in the know he was nick-named “The Obsidian Eye”, due in part to his seemingly supernatural investigative skills. In truth, he has his own personal collection of artifacts that undoubtably help him solve his cases and allow him to acquire more knowledge, power, and even more artifacts to help him along the way. It was because of these qualifications that he was chosen specifically for our investigative task. His personal goals were unknown, but his reputation for fulfilling discrete contracts was immaculate. He has no interest in common currencies, rare art, or uncommon materials. Contained life essences on the other hand; were of great interest to him. Like KULT, he knew that each essence was a singular unique sentience in all the universe. No two were ever the same.

Despite his passion for discovering truths, and unbeknownst to most sentiences of this thread — Detective Miller had always been deceptive about his true appearance. He was a type of super-mortal; commonly referred to as a devil in the local vernacular. He was able to hide his true identity from most beings through the use of a few glamour artifacts. In his true form he stood just under eight feet tall, and his skin had a creamy alabaster hue. His eyes would have both normally been a dulled yellow color, but due to an injury in his adventuring career, one was as black as obsidian. Perhaps that was the true reason for his “given” nickname.

According to the KULT monitors and executors of this thread regarding knowledge of devils: non-fatal wounds tend to completely heal rather fast; over the course of a couple of hours. They are however, not immune to pain, but have an iron-clad will. Documented attempts at interrogations have been met with complete failure as they just simply refuse to speak. Their physical forms are easy enough to damage as most mortals, and fatal wounds do prove to be “technically” biologically fatal. However, in the span of less than a day, their bodies and belongings completely evaporate. To further study this, we have completely encased their corpses in the densest materials we know of, and observed them literally disappear into nothingness.

Little is actually known as to what happens during and after death, but devils that had been previously killed have been observed in public within days of dying. Physically they appear exactly the same as before their death, but one differing distinction is that they retain a scar from their previously fatal wound. It is theorized that the devils of this thread may be rare beings whose life essence spans the gaps between nearby local dimensions. And that killing the physical body in one dimensions, is akin to removing the stems and leaves of a weed. It’s roots still remain entrenched in nearby dimensions and will regenerate the whole given enough time.

For over a year, Detective Miller had been providing reports on his observations about The Midnight Order, and that he was generally frustrated with what seemed to be a rather difficult case. What had been provided so far was that the Midnight order was located somewhere in a historical hotel located a few kilometers northeast from Reims, France. KULT already knew much of this information, but was rather satisfied with such a vital piece of information. However, in the last two months he had made some breakthrough discoveries that KULT hadn’t. For instance, entry into the Midnight Order involved checking into room 273 during a supermoon. His last report mentioned that he had concerns that someone might be tailing him. After missing a scheduled update, we immediately sent a few of our monitors to investigate his whereabouts.

Detective Hubert Miller was found dead in his own apartment with three gunshot wounds in what appears to be a ritualistic assassination. One bullet wound was to the center of the left hand, one to the forehead, and one to the heart. Most importantly, he appeared to be actually dead — an achievement KULT had not yet discovered with devils. Three spent bullet casings were found at the scene of the crime, each casing was etched with his initials. Traces of decayed xasniucium residue were found on the bullet casings, and in his wounds. This suggests that the bullets may have been made of the rare element.

Xasniucium, also known as Star’s Tears, is an extremely rare and relatively undiscovered element among all threads KULT has traversed so far. To date it has only ever been found as small grains in dense clusters of dark matter, and in long thin threads swiftly orbiting along the event horizons of black holes. It decays within a matter of hours in most environments. Storing it in a tube of argon gas can extend its life by days, while crystallized argon can store it for years. It is only truly stable in a complete vacuum in the spaces between galaxies, where matter essentially does not exist.

The residue left from decay lasts only for a few days, and could easily be mistaken for human blood. One of the more interesting qualities of xasniucium is its reaction with gravitational fields; it emits a pale green-blue light which gets brighter the faster it travels kinetically. When observing xasniucium at the edges of a black hole, its intense light emissions appear to be tears falling in to the void.

For this particular thread, research spanning multiple cultures and civilizations regarding devils all point to a similar unifying theme; that knowing the true names of devils imparts some control over them. At best, they may be commanded to perform a few tasks, or banished from an area temporarily. Being super-mortals, time is always on their side. To them, humans are like butterflies who flutter for a day and think it is forever. Those days come and go, and for the most part the devils name will once again be a forgotten memory.

It is suspected that Vagath was Detective Millers true name, that whoever had been tailing him knew of his true nature, and knew exactly how to eliminate him. It is also suspected that whatever ritual had been performed was quite intentional, that the location of the wounds were vital to ending his existence, and that such a rare element as xasniucium was not only required, but to also be etched with his true name to permanently snuff out his life-force out down to the root. Unfortunately, this still is further proof that once a life essence is destroyed, it cannot be brought back by any means; and a major setback to ongoing KULT research.

Whatever entity that was able to not only acquire the knowledge of his true name, an extremely rare and difficult material to acquire, and the methods required to end his life permanently — are more than capable of cleaning up the messes they leave behind. Not only that, but they chose to leave a collection of minor artifacts and his personal belongings behind as well. This appears to be a purposeful message to KULT, that they know, that we know.

Detective Miller’s apartment contained quite the treasure trove of interesting artifacts and curiosities. It is fair to assume that The Midnight Order had confiscated the more powerful ones for their own purposes. It will take quite some time for KULT to fully process Hubert Millers collection of belongings. One of the simpler but quite utilitarian artifacts in his possession was his legendary hat. A wearer could will it could change its appearance in minor ways. It is theorized that Detective Miller used this as needed to help with his investigations and covert infiltrations, allowing him to blend in to the crowd as needed. Another feature it seems to have is to emit either a minor aura of calmness or a strong aura of terror, both useful features when asking suspects for vital information in an investigation. Because of these qualities this had is deemed as an appropriate release by KULT to all Kultists at the initiate researcher level.

Hubert Miller’s body has been moved to █████████████████, Section ████, Isle █████, Unit ███, where it is cryogenically stored for further research. It is hoped that further research at a future time may shed light on how his essence spans parallel threads and regenerates when the connection to one thread is severed. Until such technical designs are transmitted from the primary thread, any research will have to be put on hold.

Postmortem Report

  • Investigation: The Midnight Order

  • Subject: Amelia Lynch a.k.a. “The Nightingale”
  • Subject Matter: A collection of prosthetic noses

Among the many curios, oddities, and artifacts found in Huber Miller’s apartment, were a collection of prosthetic noses crafted by a very skilled jeweler. Since Detective Miller still had his nose at the time of his death, this warranted further investigation by the KULT monitors.

The prosthetics had originally belonged to a Miss Amelia “The Nightingale” Lynch; a ruthless crime boss of the era. Miller’s case files reveal that she used her natural charm and persuasion to achieve most of her goals, often following up with rock solid blackmail schemes which ensured further loyalty and obedience. Those who didn’t fall for her charms or schemes, often found themselves at the end of her long rifle, or worse.

Little is known about Miss Lynch’s early life before crime. It was as if she arrived from nowhere, and was immediately accomplishing big heists. It wasn’t without error though – during the first year that her name was appearing in headlines, she had killed Michael “Mickey” Dunn, a well known moonshiner and small-time crime boss. In the bloody shoot-out, she lost her nose to a stray bullet.

During her recovery she had commissioned several opulent prosthetic noses. Once she had fully recovered, she had resumed her ruthless lifestyle, and her noses became her trademark of the era. It is rumored that if anyone made any comments other than praise for her appearance, they would be shot on sight. That alone commanded a great deal of respect when interacting with her.

About a decade in to her life of crime, Detective Hubert Miller was hired by state authorities to directly connect her to many of the crimes associated with her “businesses”, The Alcazar Casino. However, he was discovered early on in his investigations. In the shoot-out that ensued, Detective Miller caught a bullet with his left eye, falling to the floor dead. During the cleanup, his body was moved to a storehouse for more appropriate disposal the next day, while the mob took care of their wounded overnight at a local veterinarian. But when they arrived to tie up the loose ends, his body was gone – and it was assumed he had lived and escaped.

After the incident, Hubert Miller hadn’t been seen by anyone for almost a month, including his original contractors. Then one day he showed up and resumed his investigations as if nothing had happened. But there was one distinct difference; he appeared to have a black prosthetic eye of his own.

In the year of investigating that followed, he amassed more than enough to put The Nightingale behind bars for several life sentences. The raid by the authorities on her casino was quite costly, proving that the name Alcazar was quite apt, as the lower and hidden levels were quite the formidable fortress. Eventually Detective Miller had confronted her one-on-one, and caught her in the chest with his .38 special, sending poker chips and blood flying. The wound did not kill her, but it knocked her out, ending the whole raid.

In the year that followed, the case of the century made headlines across the nation, and so did Miss Lynch’s disfigured face. She served seven consecutive life sentences as well as a long laundry list of other crimes she’s been convicted of.

After her incarceration it is assumed that Detective Miller kept her collection of prosthetics. It is unknown if they had a sentimental value to him, or more of a trophy value.

The noses themselves have no intriguing artifact qualities that are of interest to KULT, but they do demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, and are associated with a rather interesting individual. As such they are deemed appropriate for general release by KULT to all Kultists at the lowest level.
